What is a birth chart (horoscope)?

A birth chart, or natal horoscope, is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows where the Sun, Moon and planets stood among the twelve zodiac signs, and which of the twelve houses they fell in.

Three points matter most: your Sun sign (your core identity), your Moon sign (your inner emotional self) and your Ascendant or Rising sign (how you come across). The planets add themes such as thinking, love, drive and growth.

Houses describe areas of life such as home, work and relationships. Aspects are angles between planets — conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition — that show how their energies support or challenge each other.
