How to Read a Birth Chart: A Beginner's Guide

A birth chart is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. It looks complex at first, but reading it in this order makes it manageable.

1. Start with the Big Three

Your Sun sign is your purpose, your Moon sign your emotional self and your Ascendant (rising sign) your outward style. Knowing these three already gives a solid outline.

2. Planet × sign = what and how

Each planet is a theme (planet meanings) and its sign is the style (signs). Venus in Scorpio, for example, means love expressed deeply and intensely.

3. Houses = where

The house a planet occupies is the life area where its theme plays out. Crowded houses tend to be major life themes.

4. Aspects = relationships

Finally, look at aspects, starting with the tightest orbs—they reveal your strongest traits.

If you don't know your birth time

Without a birth time you can still know most planetary signs. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so its sign may be uncertain, and the Ascendant and houses cannot be calculated. Birth certificates or hospital records often list the time.
